Dali was a dedicated student of science and the universe. While we are all familiar with the term "extraterrestrials" or beings from above. Infraterrestrials refers to beings from within. There are many who beleive there are beings that reside inside the earth and are of ancient origin. The work is part of Dali's "Cosmos" series. In the general sense, a cosmos is an orderly or harmonious system. It originates from the Greek term (kosmos), meaning "order" or "ornament" and is antithetical to the concept of chaos. Today, the word is generally used as a synonym of the word Universe. Dali refers to himself as an insect (see lower left of image) Dali was well known for his fascination with miniature and insects such as ants etc. You will find ants, butterflies, moths and other insects in many of Dali's works. Of all his self portraits, this qualifies as one of the most unusual and surreal references.
